La cotorra realThe real parrotLa cotorra puertorriqueña (Amazona vittata): por qué está en peligro y cómo ayudarThe Puerto Rican parrot (Amazona vittata): why it is endangered and how to help

Who is the Puerto Rican parrot?

Why is it endangered?
The IUCN lists it as “Critically Endangered” because, even though conservation has grown the population, the number of wild adults is still very small and hurricanes can erase years of work in a single blow.
- Forest loss. The parrot nests in cavities of old trees and eats forest fruit. With the island’s historic deforestation it lost almost all of its home and its population fell to a minimum. The historic low (often cited as 13 birds in 1975): to be verified in an official source.
- Huracanes.
- Hurricanes. In September 2017 Hurricane María wiped out the entire wild population of El Yunque; Río Abajo lost 40% of its own, and both aviaries were badly damaged.
- Captura y mascotismo.
- Trapping and the pet trade. Taking chicks to sell as pets was one of the historic causes of its decline. Today trapping, selling or keeping one is illegal under federal law (ESA) and Puerto Rico law.
- Competencia y depredadores.
- Competition and predators. Other birds and honeybees take over its nest cavities, and hawks prey on newly released parrots.

Three agencies have worked together for decades: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA/DNER) and the U.S. Forest Service. They manage parrots in three forests so that no single disease or hurricane can wipe them all out at once.
Dos aviariosTwo aviaries
- Aviario Iguaca, en el Bosque Nacional El Yunque. Lo maneja el USFWS.
- Iguaca Aviary, in El Yunque National Forest. Run by USFWS.
- Aviario José L. Vivaldi, en el Bosque de Río Abajo (Arecibo-Utuado). Lo maneja el DRNA.
- José L. Vivaldi Aviary, in Río Abajo Forest (Arecibo-Utuado). Run by the DRNA.
There they incubate eggs, raise chicks, give emergency care to injured wild parrots and train the birds before release.
Liberaciones y tres poblaciones silvestresReleases and three wild populations
- In 2006 a second wild population was established in Río Abajo; in 2016 the first steps were taken toward a third one in Maricao State Forest.
- After Hurricane María, releases of aviary-raised parrots resumed in 2020 in El Yunque and Río Abajo, and in 2022 in Maricao.
- Estimated wild population (USFWS, February 2026): 320 to 340 in Río Abajo, 100 to 105 in El Yunque and 100 to 105 in Maricao. Pairs are already nesting in natural cavities in Río Abajo and Maricao: a sign that the population is starting to sustain itself.

¿Cómo puedes ayudar? How can you help?
No hace falta dinero.
You do not need money. These four things protect the parrot the most:
It is protected by federal and Puerto Rico law. If someone offers you a Puerto Rican parrot, do not buy it and alert the DRNA. A green pet-store parrot is not a Puerto Rican parrot: the legal ones are species from other countries.
- Reporta avistamientosReport sightings
If you see a Puerto Rican parrot outside El Yunque, Río Abajo or Maricao, or an injured one, note the place, date and time, take a photo if you can, and alert the DRNA or the USFWS Caribbean office. Do not touch it or try to catch it.
- Cuida el bosqueCare for the forest
The parrot needs old trees with cavities and forest fruit. Visit El Yunque respectfully, leave no trash, never release pets or foreign plants, and support native tree planting.
- Apoya a las organizaciones oficialesSupport the official organizations
The ones that actually raise and release parrots are the agencies below. Get to know them, visit the El Portal Visitor Center in El Yunque (it has a permanent parrot exhibit) and share what you learn.
